Pathiyam samayal
Food specially prepared for a new mother .
If you are a Brahman and a Tambram at it, you would have heard these words in a household that has just been blessed with a new -born baby.
The food items prepared under this category is mainly meant for the new mother, to help her out in recovering from the internal wounds that she would have after the delivery.
The main ingredients used for flavouring are pepper, pepper and some more pepper, ladles of ghee, salt.
It is the post-natal care for both the new mother and the baby, making sure they don't suffer from indigestion.
Nowadays , however, either due to the lack of support system( elderly people or parents) many of us just about take the normal food we have during normal times. But you can actually feel the difference the specially prepared food has compared to the normal diet we follow.
The options one has for this particular food preparation might be a tad bit limited, but with new experiments you can prepare a variety of dishes. Thanks to my mom, I got to taste some of the best food dishes during this time, though they did strictly follow the norm of "Pathiyam".
I would like to share some of the recipes to all you people out there. It is not necessary that these items are meant only for "special occasion", it can be made for the normal diet.

Generally the Post-Natal "Pathiyam" is advised for the following Reasons.
ReplyDelete1. As you had blogged, it is easy to digest and also provides a way of regaining the lost strenght.
2. Having normal foreign vegetables(other than country vegetables like snake gourd , ridge gourd etc ), fried items and spicy food will adverse effect on the body.
Fried Items builds up cholestral and builds up oodles of fat around the tummy .The one reason why most of the Indian women tend to become fat after childbirth
Spicy Food will cause the internal wound to heal slowly.. and moreover it is a big discomfort to have a burning sensation inside all the day
The So called Foreign Vegetables have certain side effects ( like gas , joint pains etc ), which is avoided .
3.Finally this Pathiyam differes from region to region in india. South indian Tam - Bram Pathiyam also helps in reducing the Post natal depression that most women suffer..( I might have provide a reference.. but read about this when my wife was pregnant )
4. Some Tam-Bram households dont use Garlic. But use of garlic helps in Lactation.
5. Lots of Milk and Water have to be intaken during this pathiyam. Some women get Urinary infection due to short intake of Water ..

Finally You forgot about the "Legiyam". That helps in contraction of Uterus fast back to its old Form and also helps in regulating periods..
